One critical barrier to being able to settle and integrate in a new area is being able to communicate in English, sPeak to neighbours, make friends and develop local networks outside of those that speak your own language – ‘This way for English’ aims to address this.
Who is it for?
Refugees, asylum seekers and migrants living in Kirklees who have an English as a Second Language (ESOL) need.
What do we do?
- assess English language development needs
- identify other social and personal support needs
- refer/signpost to appropriate support
- highlight gaps and barriers and seek funding to address these
Where does it take place in Kirklees?
There are four #Kirkleeswelcomes hubs which are:
Batley Monday 1pm – 5pm
Dewsbury Tuesday 1pm – 5pm
Huddersfield Wednesday 1pm – 4:30pm
Greenwood Centre Thursday 1pm – 5pm

Q) What is the criteria to join the programme?
A) The participant must have English language (ESOL) need and live in Kirklees.
Q) Can people just drop into the welcome hubs?
A) Yes, we encourage individuals and families to drop in and meet the team. Each session is conducted by an experienced member of staff who can help with a variety of needs.
Q) What do you do if someone can’t attend the hubs?
A) Call us and we will look to meet the person at a place, time or venue that suits them.
Q) How long does the Initial assessment take?
A) On average the assessment takes 30 minutes.
